Welcome to the Primary 3 Reading Workshop.

What makes a good reader? They… know all their sounds and can blend them together to make words. read with fluency – no stumbling. read with expression – tell the story.

They can also… show they understand the obvious meaning of the passage by telling the story in their own words. Discuss any hidden meanings of the passage.

Please read to yourself ’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves       Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves,       And the mome raths outgrabe. Jabberwocky By Lewis Carroll . You were able to sound out the letters - You may even be able to read it with expression but… were you reading?

Reading Is About More Than: Knowing Words Sounding out Reading the text with expression Connecting with the text at a deeper level. It Is About:

What makes a good reader? think while they are reading ask themselves questions visualise clarify summarise what they have read predict what might happen next

How to understand text? We need to equip our children with strategies to help them to know how to understand the text. We need to teach our children how to actually engage with text for meaning.

How do we achieve this? To do this successfully we teach our children strategies: Before reading During reading After reading

Before Reading Strategies Before Strategies   Predicting Connecting Self Questioning Skimming

Predicting is when the children use the title page, the blurb or what they have read so far to help them make an informed guess as to What type of text it is Who will be in the story What will the story/book be about What will happen next…. Connecting is when the children make connections between the text and Their own experiences Previously learned knowledge Links with other books Characters/plots….

Self Questioning is when children ask What do I know? What do I want to know? How will I find that out?.... Skimming is where the children learn how to locate information before reading by skimming through Illustrations and blurb Contents page Headings and sub headings Chapter titles….

During Reading Strategies During Strategies   Connecting Comparing Predicting Visualising Self Questioning

Comparing Comparing is when children compare what they have read with their own experiences. They bring their own knowledge of Settings Characters Events…

Visualising Visualising is where children use what they have read to ‘see the scene’. They can do this by Illustrating a passage/scene Labelling a picture (descriptive language) Acting out the scene Discussing what they ‘see’ with others…

Determining Importance Summarising and Paraphrasing After Reading Strategies After Strategies   Inferring Synthesising Scanning Determining Importance Summarising and Paraphrasing

Inferring is when children read between the lines. They can do this by Role play (become the character/Character hot seat) Character label (qualities, reactions, thoughts and feelings) Discuss the event (what happened and what effect did it have?)… Synthesising is when children use the knowledge they have inferred and can sequence and connect these. They can do this by Identifying who/what/where/when/why/how for a key event Discussing and justifying thoughts with others Using the notes from other activities to support and evidence their thinking…

Scanning is when children locate information from a known text Scanning is when children locate information from a known text. Examples of this would be Finding a word on a page. Finding specific information Scanning a text for an answer to a question…. Determining importance is when children identify the key important parts of the text. They can do this by identifying Main characters Settings Theme Events/conflicts Key words…

These skills can be applied to any text at home and at school. This feeds into Summarising and Paraphrasing. This is when the children can tell the key events of the story or build a picture using their own words. They can do this by Drawing a picture and labelling the main events Rewrite the text in their own words, as many different ways a possible, without losing the main meaning. Timeline of key events… These skills can be applied to any text at home and at school.
