Objective: You will be able to differentiate between living and nonliving things. Do Now: Read the introduction on top of page 16 Define biology.
 All living things are made up of one (unicellular) or more cells (multicellular). › Cell - smallest unit capable of performing all life’s processes.

CHARACTERISTICS OF LIFE All organisms, no matter how different from each other, share certain features that are specific only to living things (you saw.
1.Organizatio n -presence of one or more cells - a cell is the smallest unit that can perform all life’s processes - unicellular = one cell - multicellular.
Themes of Biology. Definition of Biology  Biology is the study of life, or all living things.  An individual living thing is referred to as an organism.

Biology- study of life Organism- living thing 6 Themes of Biology Biology- study of life Organism- living thing

1. Cell Structure and Function Unicellular- made of only one cell. Multicellular- made of many cells. Differentiation- forming many cells from one fertilized egg.

2. Homeostasis The ability of the body to keep a constant internal environment Examples: Temperature, blood sugar, water levels

3. Reproduction and Inheritance Reproduction- producing offspring Inheritance- handing traits down to offspring

4. Evolution Evolution- the change in populations over time. Natural Selection- survival of the fittest

5. Interdependence of Organisms Ecology- the study of how living things are dependent on one another. Ecosystem- all of the living and non-living things in an area.

6. Matter, Energy, and Organization Autotrophs- produce their own food. Heterotrophs- organisms that need to eat other things.
