Confucianism World Geography

Confucianism Confucianism s based on the teachings of Confucius who lived from 551- 479 BC. It is a set of strict rules of behavior for certain social relationships including the relationship between ruler & subject, parent & Child.

Confucianism In each case one person in the relationship was superior. It is the duty of the superior to be “good”. It is the duty of the subject to respond with duty and allegiance to the superior.

Confucianism Confucius felt that if all people were good and followed his orderly rules order would take the place of disorder Confucius wrote nine books called the Analects – guides for family and government organizations.

Mencius Mencius 373-288 BC was a follower of Confucianism. Asked what can be done if a ruler is not “good” as Confucius expected them to be?

Mencius His answer was that in such cases people have the right to rebel against bad rule. He also thought people were the real political power. Western idea comes from John Lock in the 1600’s
