Literary Devices: Show What You Know October 30th, 2014

Warm Up: My Life Warm Up: My Life Date: Thursday, October 30th, 2014 Writing Prompt: Which of this week’s vocabulary words is applicable to you or your life? Identify that word and explain how it is so.

Agenda Learning Target:  Today I will show how well I understand literary devices by using them in the context of short, timed writings. Today’s Meet Recap Show What You Know: The Challenge Pass the Plicker

Show What You Know You will be presented with a selection of literary devices and possible subjects. You will have to combine the subject(s) with that literary device to make an interesting mini-story during one song. Good Luck! Students will be chosen at random to share!

Today’s Meet Recap Let’s take a moment to look at some of the silly stories you and your classmates did for extra credit. https://todaysmeet.com/ShowWhatYou Know (If you have a device, feel free to follow along online.) What literary devices can we find? Which are the funniest? Do you think you can do better?

Face off time! It is now your turn! All you have to do is use one of the suggestions we come up with and pair it against the random spinning wheel’s suggestion for a literary term. You will have five minutes to create your own silly story with all of the elements you have been provided. Make your story as funny as possible! The winner will get a prize!

Subject Share (3rd) What are some subjects that might make for an interesting story? Popcorn out your suggestions! People Places Things Events Your Mother Your Home Pumpkin Spice Halloween Beyonce’ A ratchet (the tool) Canada New Year’s The President Blender Disney World Hanukkah

4-2-1 With the class divided up into four groups, each group will now decide on the best one. Take three songs to share your strongest mini-story with your group (and your group mates will share theirs too). Which one was the strongest? That one will represent your group. We will repeat the process with two groups and then the two halves of the class.

Pass the Plicker (Vocab Review!) Once again, you and your classmates will have the opportunity to play with the Plickers. At your table groups, each of you will have a turn to answer the vocab question. When you finish, pass the plicker to your left. How well do you know this week’s vocabulary?

Homework Read for 30 minutes. Continue work on your Genius Hour project. Study for tomorrow’s vocabulary quiz.

Closing Quick Plick: You will be shown up to four examples of literary devices in action.  You will have to select “A” if the statement using the lit device is true or “B” if it is not.  I’ll explain after each question why the answer is correct.
