Cultures & Communities: Tanzania What is the program about? Coursework Activities & Excursions Accommodations Program Fee/Finance Planning Application process

What is the program about? The group will partner with The Vijiji Foundation, a local non-profit organization to learn the principles and practices of Community Based Research and to work alongside community members to develop and implement a variety of sustainable VolunTourism programs in bio-intensive agriculture and the environment, education and English-language literacy, and sustainable community development.

Coursework ANTH 409: Community-Based Research The goal of CBR is to develop a process and a product that are useful to the community in creating positive social change ANTH 490: Anthropological Perspectives on Voluntourism examines the potential and pitfalls of Voluntourism through both theoretical and applied perspectives

Activities & Excursions Our days will be a mixture of classroom and hands-on experience, with the majority of the time spent working directly with the local Meru people.

Activities & Excursions Weekends are free to explore the many nearby attractions and will include a number of day trips to places such as Lake Manyara National Park, Tarangire National Park, Crater Lake Challa, and Maasai territory.

Activities & Excursions Optional additional week at the end for a wildlife and culture safari to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Olduvai Gorge and the villages of the Datoga, Iraqw and Hadza of the Lake Eyasi region (if you choose this option, there is an additional cost)

Accommodations We will live and work in Nguruma Village, an agricultural community of about 4000 people situated on the lush, lower slopes of Mount Meru, just 10km east of Arusha, the largest city in the area. Need an indoor Accommodation shot here

Program Fee/Finance Planning Program Fee $3,300 Includes: Accommodations All meals Transportation to the village from Arusha Any in-country transportation Any cultural activities during the six weeks Basic Swahili language training $ Go Global Fee

Program Fee/Finance Planning Program Fee $3,300 Does not include: Round-trip air tickets (Approx. $2,000) UBC tuition for 2 courses Immunizations (if necessary) Visas (approx ??) Program Fee/Finance Planning Go Global Award of $1,000 70% average in your best 24 credits (8 courses) Looking at your year – so last year! No Fails or Standing Defers Deposited in March directly to your SSC

Program Fee/Finance Planning How the Program Fee is paid 1. Deposit in early December ($500) 1.- flight purchase ideally between Dec-Feb 2. Second payment in late January ($800) 3. Third payment in late February ($1000) 4. Fourth payment in mid March ($1000)
