What words spring to mind when you look at this image? 2-Jan-19 What words spring to mind when you look at this image? Obviously if you want to change the picture to a more local example please do. The idea is that we want to get students thinking about what is important to them about living here Students will probably list some of the things they see in the picture, which is fine Then ask them to say how it makes them feel and whether the responses are largely positive or negative- ask why 2

Martin Luther King, racism, equality, bullying Objectives By the end of this lesson you should be able to… Explain where we find racism Explain how we can fight it Explain why diversity is important Keywords Martin Luther King, racism, equality, bullying

London is one of the most diverse cities in the world. London is the capital and most populated city in the United Kingdom. Standing on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for over two thousand years, its history going back to its founding by the Romans, who named it Londinium. London has a wide range of people and culture, and more than 300 languages are spoken within Greater London. The Greater London Authority currently estimated its population to be 8.6 million, making it the largest city in the European Union, and accounting for 12.5 per cent of the UK population. London is one of the most diverse cities in the world. From Wikipedia It’s wordy and you may want to change it. The idea though is to get students thinking about how London is so diverse and why that is viewed by many as being a really strong point about living here. It’s diverse and therefore for many people exciting. You could talk about the variety of food, music, religions, languages spoken etc.

Things you may want to discuss: Ask them to identify where we are Ask if students know about any ancestry they have to other countries or of the were born abroad Find out where they have been on holidays

What do the following pictures show? Pictures are all about Rosa Parks and the bus boycott

How do these make you feel? Now try and come up with a definition of the word racism Pictures from America and Apartheid South Africa Give a couple of minutes for this. You might want them to write it on a post-it and then stick them on the board so you can compare

Class vote: Is racism still a problem in the UK? Definition of racism: 1 : belief that certain races of people are by birth and nature superior to others. 2 : discrimination or hatred based on race. Class vote: Is racism still a problem in the UK? Where do find racism in Britain today? In pairs come up with ideas Go through this and explain these words to the students

Different groups that make up the UK Different religious groups that make up the UK Do these figures surprise you ? Ethnic Group You answer Actual % WHITE ___________% 86% ASIAN 7.5% BLACK 3.5% MIXED RACE 2% CHINESE 0.5_% OTHER ETHNIC GROUPS REVEAL REVEAL REVEAL REVEAL Get the students to estimate first. Are they surprised? REVEAL REVEAL

Racist words are still used by some people Freshy Chav Have you heard these words before? Have you ever used them? Have you ever been called anything racist? What do you think a religious leader would say if they heard people using these words? If you aren’t comfortable with these words replace them or choose words that you think the students are more likely to have overheard. You might want students to write words they’ve heard on a post-it and then collect them in and discuss one’s you’re happy to discuss, this might be better than getting students to say things which might offend others.
