Jefferson on the Compromise But, as it is, we have the wolf by the ear, and we can neither hold him, nor safely let him go. Justice is in one scale, and self-preservation in the other." - Thomas Jefferson to John Holmes, (discussing slavery and the Missouri question), Monticello, 22 April 1820. In your Composition Book explain what Jefferson is talking about.

What was the Missouri Compromise? Maine would be admitted as a free state and Missouri as a slave state. Slavery would be prohibited in the Louisiana Territory north of 36 degrees 30 minutes. Missouri prohibited from Discriminating against free blacks from other states.

Question Look ahead… Will the Missouri Compromise hold? Why or why not. Who supported it? Who opposed it? Why?

What role did Henry Clay play in the passage of the Missouri Compromise? He brokered the compromise to allow Missouri to enter the Union. Became known as the “Great Compromiser”

Thomas Jefferson on Division of Nation caused by Missouri Compromise. "...this momentous question, like a fire bell in the night, awakened and filled me with terror. I considered it at once as the knell of the Union. It is hushed, indeed, for the moment. But this is a reprieve only, not a final sentence. A geographical line, coinciding with a marked principle, moral and political, once conceived and held up to the angry passions of men, will never be obliterated; and every new irritation will mark it deeper and deeper."  What does Jefferson mean?

The Monroe Doctrine Read the excerpt from the Speech by James Monroe and create a headline for the document.

Monroe Doctrine

Why was the Monroe Doctrine necessary? Many Central and South American countries had thrown off colonial dominance and declared their independence. Some European countries thought of re-establishing control over former colonies.

What did the Monroe Doctrine state? Declared American dominance of the Western Hemisphere and told other countries to not interfere in the Americas. How did we plan on enforcing the Doctrine?
