Admitted Missouri as a slave state MISSOURI COMPROMISE - 1820 Admitted Missouri as a slave state Admitted Maine as a free state Divided Louisiana Purchase lands along the 36 30 parallel into slave and free areas. o

COMPROMISE OF 1850 Admitted California as a free state. Lands won from Mexico were divided into two territories – New Mexico and Utah Voters in those lands made decisions on the slavery issue Included a Strong Fugitive Slave Law

KANSAS-NEBRASKA ACT Changed rules of Missouri Compromise Settlers of Kansas and Nebraska voted to decide if slavery should be allowed. Led to fighting in Kansas over slavery – Kansas became known as “Bleeding Kansas”

Dred Scott Decision Dred Scott was an enslaved African who asked the Supreme Court for his freedom because he lived on free land. The Supreme Court denied him his freedom. It also ruled the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional.
