Foundations: Behaviour and Social Change

“You are both an observer and participant in human behaviour.” Quote Analysis Write down the following sentence: “You are both an observer and participant in human behaviour.” Underline what you feel is the most important word in this sentence Write a brief reason why you chose that word

Behaviour Behaviour is everything a person does. “Behaviour” refers to all behaviors, not just problem behaviours. Behaviours can be observed (seen/heard/experienced) in a variety of ways People can agree something happened Behaviours can be measured

Why Do We Engage in Certain Behaviors? People are likely to engage in behaviors that work. You see a student when you arrive to class You say “hello” Other student says “hello” back to you What are you likely to do tomorrow in the same scenario? People are less likely to engage in behaviors that do not work. Other student does not say “hello” back

Principles of Behaviors Almost all human behavior is learned All behaviors occur for a reason No behaviors occur “out of blue” Behaviors continue to occur because they are effective Behaviors stop occurring because they are ineffective

Storm and Stress Article – Read and Respond Background: In 1904 psychologist G. Stanley Hall (a contemporary of Frued and Jung) coined the term ‘adolescence’ when describing teenagers. A key element of his discussion centered on the idea of adolescent ‘storm and stress’, a theory which has been largely challenged. Read the article you’ve been given and answer the questions. Please return the article when you’re done.

Wrap Up Not done? Take the articles home and do for homework (and I’m going to check) Before you go let’s discuss the first few questions.
