“Eyes and Feet on the Street” 2003 CPTED Ontario Conference Dorinda R. Howe, FCPP

“Eyes and Feet on the Street” “Whose Eyes? Whose Feet? and Which Streets?”

Whose Eyes? Who are the observers? Where are they? What helps them see me? What hinders their surveillance? Do they really watch? Will they help me? How do I feel?

The art of illusion!

Residential street- Orange Villas

Whose Feet? Why do you use the street? Where are you going? Is there easy access to your destination? Who uses this street besides me? How do you get here? Car, public transportation, walking? Who are the everyday users and why?

Which Streets? Why do I come here? Is the destination important? Am I stopping or just passing through? Do I live here or nearby? What makes this street desirable or undesirable? Whose street is this?

Behavior –This is personal! How do you as a CPTED practitioner know what is happening on this street? What are your methods? What do crime statistics tell you? Do you talk to the users?

What makes a street undesirable? Street lighting only (not pedestrian) One way streets with no parking Fast traffic Hidden alcoves Loiterers Poorly designated spaces Trash on streets Little or no pedestrian traffic Graffiti Covered windows Crime

What makes a street desirable? Pedestrian lighting Wide sidewalks Buffer from traffic Accessible parking Good signage Clean walk areas Storefronts/ buildings with windows Minimal building setbacks Pedestrian traffic
