THE WONDERFUL NAME OF JESUS! A study by KEN CHANT

Introduction An incredible promise ! See John 14:13-14 – “Whatever you ask me, in my name,” said Jesus, “I will do! Indeed, I will do anything that you ask in my name!”

An ancient problem ! Augustine (5th century) – “What shall we make of these words of Christ, `Ask whatever you please’’? For do we not everywhere see God’s faithful people often asking, but seldom receiving?”

We are left with a clear choice between frustration or faith ! Which will it be? ? ? ? ? ?

ASK IN THE AUTHORITY OF HIS NAME In which of the Gospels is the promise found? How many times are we told to do so? The name of Jesus !

Only in the Gospel of John ! Only at the end of John – See 14:13, 14; 15:16; 16:23,24,26.

Why is this so ? Perhaps because – Jesus wished to highlight the importance of this kind of prayer. John saw a need for faith to be renewed.

We need to be careful that we do not make ourselves guilty of breaking the Third Commandment !

ASK IN THE ABUNDANCE OF HIS NAME In the 6th century before Christ, the family of Alcmaeon came into sudden prominence in Athens . . . .

Let us be done with parsimonious prayer! You can hardly offend the Father by asking for too much! We should stir ourselves to speak each prayer in the name of Jesus, for that Name must be –

Spoken , or it will remain ineffective Spoken boldly , without false shame Spoken believingly . . . .

ASK IN THE ANTICIPATION OF HIS NAME Consider Mark 11:22-24 .
