The Crisis of the Concho By: Aqua Squad 2013

We are Aqua Squad Aqua Squad is a project of the UCRA, the San Angelo museum of fine arts and San Angelo ISD

Concho River Watershed Being part of Aqua Squad, we have learned quite a bit about our local water shed and local water conservation. The fact that Concho River is a tributary to the Colorado River, so we have to think of the other people down stream. Concho River Watershed

This chart shows the causes of low dissolved oxygen in water – HUMANS! Scarlet-These are some explanations of our water quality, and as you can see one of the main causes of pollution is “human Activities .” This is the result of our careless decisions. Heba-This is the South Concho River. It’s low dissolved oxygen , which is the result of a lot of algae which is the result of nitrates that are mainly from fertilizer. Scarlet-Here we have a picture of O.C. fisher back in 2009 as you can see it is in good and seems to have a decent amount of quality water. Heba-Now we will move on to 2011, where O.C. Fisher’s water quality and amount has drastically decreased. The South Concho River with low dissolved oxygen(DO) and high bacteria . South Concho River

1 SCENARIO 1 N. Concho River Polluted Rivers

What our rivers should look like SCENARIO 2 What our rivers should look like S. Concho River

We are doing many things right! Vortex separators Storm water monitoring Hickory Aquifer Pipeline

Education Rain barrel This is a rain barrel. It is very simple to make. (insert video of Hebe making a rain barrel) Parts of a rain barrel A group of Aqua Squad members educating the next generation

What needs to be done? Address fracking issue http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHQu3SeUwUI

What we can do! Water Rate Restructuring Toilet Replacements Focus on higher rates for the highest users. You can save 12,000 gallons of water in a year with a new toilet.

What we can do! Rebates More enforcement

water use calculator Have a clear conservation goal per person and communicate this goal

Education Communicate even more about lake levels – with visuals Clear up misconception about Nasworthy levels City of Arlington – updates every day

WE CAN DO IT living on 5 gallons/day
