1.Election of 2000 -Republican George W. Bush versus Democrat Al Gore -George W. Bush is the son of former president George H W Bush -Al Gore was the Vice President under President Bill Clinton throughout the 1990s -Controversial election Gore won popular vote, Bush won electoral college vote (this is not the only instance of this in U.S. history) Gore demands recount in pivotal state of Florida, Supreme Court cancels recount efforts in Bush v. Gore George Bush wins in the closest election in our nation’s history

2.George W. Bush Served two terms as president, defeating Democrat challenger John Kerry in the presidential election of 2004 Many major events occurred during his tenure in office: -9/11 terrorist attack and ensuing War on Terror -Hurricane Katrina (2005) -Virginia Tech shooting (2007) -Housing market crash and the ensuing economic crash in 2007-2008

3. 9/11 & Ensuing War September 11th, 2001 saw the greatest terrorist attack in our nation’s history -American Airlines 11 & 175 crash into World Trade Center -American Airlines 77 crashed into Pentagon -United Airlines 93, headed for capital, crashed in Penn. Field War on Terror -War against terrorists and all countries harboring them -Immediately followed the 9/11 attacks in September/October of 2001. Still continues today. -Operation Red Dawn-resulted in the capture of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein in December 2003 -Objective is to fight the “Axis of Evil”

4.Barack Obama -First African American ever elected to the office of president of the United States. -Defeated Republican John McCain in the 2008 presidential election and Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election Notable events during his presidency: -Passage of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) in March of 2010 and the ensuing controversy -Operation Neptune Spear-resulted in the assassination of Osama Bin Laden in May of 2011 -Rise of ISIS-Islamic State of Iraq & Syria

5.Donald Trump -Defeated Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton in the presidential election of 2016. -Political outsider (Carter? Reagan?) Agenda/Issues facing Trump as he begins his term in office: -Border Wall between the U.S. and Mexico? -Repeal of Obamacare? -Destruction of ISIS? -Russia, North Korea, etc.
