Set up Gummy Bear Lab: 1. Write a prediction/hypothesis to answer the question written at the top of your lab sheet. 2. Fill out “BEFORE soaking” data in the table by measuring with a ruler 3. Determine MASS using an electronic balance…push ON and then TARE before putting gummy bear on balance. 5. Write initials on TAPE on side of cup, place gummy bear inside and fill with water until it covers gummy bear 6. Place in back of room until next class!

Describe Photosynthesis The process of changing light energy to chemical energy which is stored as sugar Occurs in plants and some algae Plants need sunlight, Carbon Dioxide (CO2 ), and Water (H2O) as REACTANTS Describe Photosynthesis

Occurs in the ____________of plants ___________is the green pigment inside chloroplasts that absorb sunlight chloroplasts Chlorophyll

As the chlorophyll in leaves decays in the autumn, the green color fades and is replaced by the oranges and reds of carotenoids.

Click to return to main page CO₂ O₂ H₂O Glucose CHLOROPLASTS. Performs photosynthesis. It will take water and carbon dioxide, and change it in to oxygen & glucose… it’s a very simple process. Click to return to main page

(What is needed or Taken in) (What is created/produced) H2O Water Reactants CO2 Carbon Dioxide Light NADP+ ADP + P ATP NADPH (What is created/produced) Chloroplast C6H12O6 Glucose O2 Oxygen Products

The Photosynthesis Song https://youtu.be/C1_uez5WX1o

Photosynthesis: Photosynthesis is the process by which the energy of sunlight is converted into the energy of glucose. RELEASES… MAKES… carbon dioxide + water + light glucose + oxygen 6CO2 + 6H2O + light C6H12O6 + 6O2

Photosynthesis: Photosynthesis is the process by which the energy of sunlight is converted into the energy of glucose. carbon dioxide + water + light glucose + oxygen REACTANTS PRODUCTS

Photosynthesis: Photosynthesis is the process by which the energy of _________ is ________ into the energy of __________ carbon dioxide + water + light glucose + oxygen ______________ ______________

What happens during photosynthesis? Sunlight provides the energy needed to change carbon dioxide and water into glucose Oxygen is released as a waste What happens during photosynthesis?

What happens during photosynthesis? Carbon dioxide enters the leaf through holes called stomata CO2 combines with the stored energy in the chloroplasts through a chemical reaction to make glucose The sugar is moved through tubes in the leaf to the roots, stems and fruits of the plants Some of the sugar is used right away by the plant for energy; some is stored as starch; and some is built into plant tissue

Why is this important to us? **Write on bottom half of sheet!! Without photosynthesis, plants wouldn’t exist. We cannot make our own food (glucose, energy), we must get our food from plants. The oxygen released is necessary for ALL living things. Remember: Producers/Plants are the base of the food chain! Why is this important to us? **Write on bottom half of sheet!!

Gummy Bear Lab Day 2 Gently roll bear from cup onto flat paper towel Measure the height & width of your bear FIRST!! Measure mass- Push TARE with wax paper ON electronic scale; Gently roll bear from paper towel onto scale. Record (g) and slide bear back onto paper towel. Record descriptive characteristics in the chart. Calculate the percent change…example is class set provided. You may use a calculator/device for this...SHOW YOUR WORK !! Graph percent change results in a BAR graph. Answer the analysis questions & turn in.
