Plant Processes

BellRinger 1. What are some key characteristics that distinguish organisms in kingdom plantae from organisms in other kingdoms? 2. Pick a part/structure that all plants have and explain why it is important.

TURN AND TALK Silently write your learning targets Have your homework out on your desk Answer the following question: How is water able to move up this tree against gravity. (Hint Use your notes from last class to help you answer this question.)

Agenda Bell Ringer (5 minutes) Turn and Talk (5 minutes) Discussion (10 minutes) Independent Practice (10 minutes) We do (30 minutes) Exit Quiz (30 minutes)

Where are we now? Day 1: Classification- domains and kingdoms Day 2: Tablets and cladograms Day 3: Plant organs and tissues Day 4: Plant physiological processes

Human Processes Student, what are some processes that human bodies do? Student, can you build on what the first student said?

What about plant processes? Humans Plants Student, predict how growth occurs in plants? Student, can you predict how excretion occurs in plants? Student, can you support what the first student said Growth and repair Excretion (sweating, using the bathroom) Digesting food Reproduction

Growth Meristematic tissue allows for plant growth Cells divide to make new cells Root cap, cambium, root tip

Cambium Section of cells in a plant that can become either part of the xylem or phloem, depending on the growth and needs of the plant

Transpiration Leaf sweat”= water released Root hairs absorb water, vascular tissue transports water up stem, stomata open and close https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mc9gUm1mMzc

Cohesion Allows water to stick to it self. This allows water to move up and down the plant

Stomata Open when guard cells are full of water, closed when guard cells do not have enough water Located on the bottom of the leaf

Photosynthesis Makes food (sugar called glucose) Leaves are wide and flat to capture sunlight, vascular tissue transports food to all parts of plant

Cellular Respiration Release energy in food Mitochondria in the cells Happens in all cells in the plant, all cells need energy!

Notebook Output Answer the questions on your worksheet as best as you can quietly. You may not start working on your lab until it is 100% correct. This is a grade!

Group Work You must stay working with your group at all times. I will call you one by one to view the stomata. you have 30 mins to draw and label everything.

Exit Quiz Quietly write your essay. Use the guiding questions to help you write the essay.

Homework Notes!!!!
