Year 2 – Reading Non-Fiction Session Wednesday 16th November 2016

General Information: Your child will sit two reading papers in May. The texts will cover a range of poetry, fiction and non-fiction. The new curriculum is more rigorous and sets high expectations which all schools have had to work hard to meet since the beginning of last year. The questions are designed to assess the comprehension and understanding of a child’s reading.

Paper 1 – Contains a selection of texts totalling between 400 and 700 words with questions about the text. Paper 2 – Contains a reading booklet of a selection of passages totalling 800 to 1100 words. Children will write their answers to questions about the passage in a separate booklet.

General Information: Each paper is worth 50% of the marks and should take approximately 30 minutes to complete, although the children are not being assessed at working at speed so will not be strictly timed.

Question Types: Some questions are multiple choice or selected response, others require short answers and some require an extended response or explanation. Next, we will look at some different question types. There is a big focus on ‘word meaning’ type questions.

Question Types:

Strategies: Look for key words from the question in the text. E.g. What is a colony? Two different strategies for reading the paper/questions: Read the question then find the answer (questions at the beginning of the paper) Read the whole text and then find the answer Find a word and copy the sentence

Activities Example SATs questions – please have a go! Read the stage books and then come up with questions you could ask your child at home.

And Finally… We would strongly advise you to use the questions we handed out at Parents Evening when supporting your child with their reading at home. Focus on comprehension and ‘word meaning’ Thank you for attending!
