Determining Your Grade Point Average (GPA)

What is a GPA? An average of your grades Helps determine class rank Determines awards, scholarships, academic eligibility in high school etc. Helps see how you’re doing in school

How are grades calculated? B = 3 C = 2 D = 1 E = 0 Share that in middle school here in Howard County, all A’s are worth 4 points, all B’s are 3 points etc. Regardless of the level of the class you’re in. This is called an unweighted GPA. However, in high school, you earn more points for being in above grade level courses. High schools look at your weighted and unweighted GPA.

Formula for Computing GPA: Match each grade earned with the equivalent points/number Total all points/numbers Add credits/classes attempted. Divide total number by total credits/classes attempted. Final number is your unweighted GPA.

GPA Worksheet Step 1: Determine point/number equivalent for each grade. i.e. Math Grade = ____ Science Grade = ____ S.S. Grade = ____ English Grade = ____ Elective Grades = ____

GPA Worksheet Continued Step 2: Add the totals together. (i.e. 4+3+3+2+2+2+4=20)

GPA Worksheet Continued Step 3: Divide the total by the number of credits taken (i.e. 20 ÷ 7 = 2.86)

Weighted vs. Unweighted Classes In high school, the quality points/number equivalent to each grade is higher when you take Advanced Placement, or Honors classes. AP Honors A 5.0 4.5 B 4.0 3.5 C 3.0 2.5 D 1.0 E
