Week 6 Vocab Definitions

Nucleotide The monomer of all nucleic acids. Made of a sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogen base. DNA Replication Creating identical copies of DNA from DNA. Occurs in the nucleus during S-phase of Interphase. Transcription Using DNA to produce mRNA. Occurs in the nucleus

Translation Process of matching mRNA codons to tRNA anticodons to assemble amino acids and form proteins. Occurs at the Ribosome. M RNA carries the genetic message from the nucleus to the ribosome for protein synthesis T RNA transfers a specific amino acid to a growing polypeptide chain at the ribosome during translation

Codon A set of three nucleotide bases of mRNA that code for a specific amino acid. Anti codon Three tRNA nucleotides that correspond to the three bases of the codon on the mRNA.

Mutation changes to the base pair sequence of the genetic material of an organism Karyotype A visual representation of chromosomes of an organism. Shows gender and/or nondisjunction.
