Light and Optics

What is Light? Light is an electro-magnetic wave Electro -> having to do with electricity Magnetic -> relating to magnetism

Light is Fast! 300 000 000 meters per second 1 080 000 000 kilometers per hour Sun Earth

Where can we get light? Most common type of light is white light …. Room lights, sun, lightbulbs Other light sources are special – only make one color of light Show light bulb and laser with fog here!!!!

What is white light made of? White light is made from all the colors in the rainbow Look closely at a Television: Made of Red, Green, and Blue dots Most common form of light is white light.

How can we split white light into colors? A Prism: What is a prism????? What is a grating????? Or A Grating:

Controlling light Reflecting with mirrors Bending with lenses (Refracting) Blocking, like a shadow in the sun We’re engineers – we like building things. To build things that use light, we have to control light.

Optics in Nature

Why do we control light? Your eyes Eyeglasses and contact lenses Lenses for TV, movie, and photographic cameras Photocopiers and fax machines Binoculars and telescopes Microscopes and magnifiers

More Uses Projectors (overhead, movie, slide, TV) CD players Supermarket product code laser scanners Weather and spy satellites Medical systems (to look inside the body) Solar energy systems
