Photography terminology

Rule of thirds The rule of thirds is a principle in photo editing where you split a photo into a grid of 9 and to make sure important parts of the photo rest on the grids intersections. If you look at this photo, you can see the rule of thirds at work, the tree in the photo rests on the vertical intersections to the right of the grid, where as the horizon rests on the lower horizontal intersection of the grid.

Lines There are multiple way lines can be used in photography to affect how a photo looks. Vertical: these portray a sense of height, or set the mood of confidence or intimidation, such as with trees or a taller person. Horizontal: these types of lines create a more relaxed mood and is used for pictures of horizons and things similar to that.

Lines (cont) Diagonal lines in photos are usually to create a mood of tension or conflict, it usually creates a very dynamic feeling. Lead in lines: this is a type of diagonal line, but what happens here. The diagonal line will eventually lead your eyes to the main focus of the photo.

Balanced shot Basically, balance in a photo is where both the left and right side of the photo catch the viewers eye equally. This photo achieves Balance in it’s symmetry For the viewer must look At both sides equally As the symmetry of The photo demands it. This photo achieves Balance by having Two important parts Of the photo on two Different sides of the photo.

Dynamic shot Dynamic shots are shots that make the viewer’s eye move, as in to look around the photo to the main subject, similar to a lead in shot, but with dynamic shots there is more than one subject in the photo, meaning mor for your eye to be drawn to.
