Tell your Life Story… In (just) Six Words!

What is a memoir? A record of events written by a person having intimate knowledge of them and based on personal observation.

Legend has it… Ernest Hemingway was challenged to write a short story in six words… His version? For sale: Baby shoes; never worn. Take out a sheet of paper, please and write what you think this story is about…

Never really finished anything, except cake. ~Carletta Perkins Not quite what I was planning. ~Summer Grimes

Danced in fields of infinite possibilities. ~Deepak Chopra Brought it to a boil, often. ~Mario Batali

6 word memoirs have become so popular lately that there is a website dedicated to them. Several books have been published, including one written entirely by teens called I Can’t Keep My Own Secrets.

Eventually, I’ll make my own breakfast. ~Sam Z. You’re the parent, act like one. ~Anais V. Can’t stop taking pictures of myself. ~Kacey K.

Lost myself for popular kids’ approval. ~Kimberly G. Me plus brother equals total disaster. ~Zachary M. I never got my Hogwarts letter. ~Deanna H. They screamed “nobody.” I believed them. ~Andrew C.

I only tell truth in journals. ~Rachel W. Money’s tight; thankfully imagination is free. ~Vanessa E. Aspiration: colonize Mars. You’re not invited. ~Jordan H. I resent people who ignore grammar. ~Molly S.

Tired of being the smart kid. ~Danielle B. Chose happiness over anger and hate. ~Samsara R. Coach ignored me. He’ll regret it. ~Maeve M. Googled what he called me. Ouch. ~Emily L.

Memoir Don’ts I like to play football alot. -Joe Schmoe

Things to Consider Be Original -- Do Not copy a saying or a phrase Be Thoughtful – Give more than “I like rainbows and pretty butterflies.” or “Playing sports is my entire life.” Be Creative – Your six words should reflect who you are/your life experience. In addition, your presentation should also reflect your words.

Write your life… Must be 6 words (not five, not seven) Must be self-reflective Must be colorful/neat No pencil-typed or pen/marker On the back, attach 2-3 sentences explaining what your memoir means.

Remember… It needs to include six words spelled correctly. Please punctuate and capitalize appropriately. It should not be turned in on notebook paper or in pencil. Please take the time to put it on printer paper or construction paper. It should include graphics, pictures, or other designs to make it ATTRACTIVE:) DUE DATE:
