Thematic T-Chart You were provided a model of the Theme T-Chart for the text The Southpaw. Today’s lesson is very similar to that one, so you may want to have it handy. I will project a partial T-Chart from The Southpaw for your convenience.

Theme: Friendships Can Survive Setbacks Note 1 Janet: Give back the Disneyland sweatshirt I said you could wear Note 2 Richard: I want my comic books now–finished or not. Janet and Richard throw verbal jabs at each other because Richard won’t let Janet play on the baseball team that he leads and Janet won’t accept this status quo. Their verbal jabs are parallel in level of intensity; they go tit for tat insulting each other. Neither character crosses the boundary into more intense insults that would violate their basic level of respect for each other. • character’s words and external conflict with chance for resolution

“The World’s Fastest Human” Create a T-Chart. Write a theme across the top of your T-Chart. On the left side of the T-chart, gather textual evidence from across the text that supports your theme. Two from the beginning, two from the middle, and two from the end. On the right side, explain why your evidence is important. You should have at least three explanations of your evidence.

Closure Submit COMPLETED T-Charts. If your T-Chart is not finished, COMPLETE it for homework and return with it tomorrow.
