Grade: 7 & 8 Subject: Geography Topic: Compass Direction

COMPASS DIRECTION WHAT IS A COMPASS????? A compass is an instrument used to determine direction. It is also used to show or give location.

COMPASS DIRECTION There are TWO ways in which direction is measured or given. These are: By compass points (represented by letters e.g. N, S, E, W) By angular bearings (represented by degrees e.g. 0⁰, 90⁰, 180⁰, 360⁰)

STEPS FOR FINDING DIRECTION Identify the direction using the indicated points (either cardinal, intermediary or sixteen points). Record the direction. Place the compass at the place or area that the direction is taken to or from. Draw a line that meets the second point that you are moving towards. Locate or identify the places that you are finding the direction whether to or from.

STEPS FOR FINDING DIRECTION Locate or identify the places that you are finding the direction whether to or from. Place the compass at the place or area that the direction is taken to or from. Draw a line that meets the second point that you are moving towards. Identify the direction using the indicated points (either cardinal, intermediary or sixteen points). Record the direction.

WHAT ARE COMPASS BEARINGS????? Bearing is defined as the direction or position of something, or the direction of movement, relative to a fixed point. It is usually measured in degrees, typically with magnetic north as zero.

COMPASS BEARINGS The bearing of a point is the number of degrees in the angle measured in a clockwise direction from the north line to the line joining the center of the compass with the point. Compass Bearings are a more precise way to indicate direction. We always use a protractor to help us find the compass bearing. As you know, a circle has 360 degrees, with 180 degrees in each half of the circle.

COMPASS BEARINGS A compass bearing will be a number, between 0 and 360 degrees, which represents the direction that one location is when viewed from a starting location. The protractor is used to determine the bearing of one place to another.

COMPASS BEARINGS STEPS FOR FIND COMPASS BEARINGS: Connect the TWO points. Draw a line (compass) through the point/ place that you are finding the direction from or to. Place the protractor with the angle aligned at 0; and read clockwise. Record the bearings.
