Self Assessment

Self Assessment How did you do? Very Poor OK Poor Good Very Good

Some Most All LO: 02/01/2019 Interpret Sankey diagrams Energy Transfers and Sankey Diagrams All Most Some Interpret Sankey diagrams Calculate energy efficiency from Sankey diagrams Construct Sankey diagrams. Keywords Conservation of energy, chemical store, energy store, thermal, kinetic, gravitational potential, elastic, dissipated/wasted, Joule/Kilojoule, efficiency, Sankey diagram

Outcomes ALL: Construct an energy transfer diagram Most: Describe some of the energy transfers and the main energy wastages that occur in a range of situations or appliances Calculate efficiency and understand the concept of efficiency. SOME: Construct energy transfer diagrams and interpret Sankey diagrams. I can do a bit of this. I can do some of this. I can do all of this.

What do I need to learn to do today? Would you be able to show the energy transfers for this washing machine? ALL Could you calculate the efficiency of this washing machine be if it converts 125J out of every 200J of energy into the machine? MOST Could you draw a Sankey diagram to show the useful and wasted energy of the washing machine? SOME If you said no to Q1 then you will start on task 1. If you said yes to Q1 then decide if you are able to do Q2. If you said no to Q2 then you will start on task 2. If you said yes to Q2 then decide if you are able to do Q3. If you said no to Q3 then you will start on task 3. If you said yes to Q3 then you will start on task 4. Efficiency = useful energy out Total energy in (x 100%)

Independent learning Work your way through the tasks so that you progress and increase your knowledge of Sankey diagrams and efficiency. Task 1 to ......................................................................Task 8 ALL ……………………………………………………………………….SOME

Conservation of energy Task sheet 2 Help sheet Conservation of energy Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can be stored and can be transferred from one type to another. Only part of the energy will be transferred usefully (to the type you want); the rest is ‘wasted’. Energy in = energy out Energy is measured in joules (J) So, if 100J goes into an appliance, then 100J will come out. But not all of the 100J coming out will be the type of energy you want. The greater the amount of energy converted to the type of energy you want the more efficient it is.

Constructing a Sankey diagram Help sheets for tasks 3 & 4 Constructing a Sankey diagram

Sankey diagram for old style bulb. Task 3 Name ____ ALL Sankey diagram for old style bulb.

Sankey diagram for new style bulb. Task 3 ALL Sankey diagram for new style bulb. What does this tell you about the new styles of light bulb? State the values that you have got from the Sankey diagram.

Task 4 ALL/MOST Name _____________

Task 5 Name _________ MOST Which answer goes with each energy transfer? 60, 100,240 How did you decide this?

? Task 6 Name _________ MOST/SOME Efficiency = useful energy out Calculate the energy transfer values. Show how you did this. Calculate the efficiency of the TV. Use the equation given. Show your working out. ? ? Efficiency = useful energy out Total energy in (x 100%)

Task 5,6,7 – information sheet

Task 7 – information sheet

Task 7 – information sheet

Progress check ALL: Construct an energy transfer diagram Most: Describe some of the energy transfers and the main energy wastages that occur in a range of situations or appliances Calculate efficiency and understand the concept of efficiency. SOME: Construct energy transfer diagrams and interpret Sankey diagrams. I can’t do any of this. I can do some of this. I can do all of this. At the start of the lesson what colour were you? At the end of the lesson what colour are you now? What else do you need to do?
