Gerunds and Gerund Phrases The simple description is a gerund is a verb that is acting as a noun. It can be replaced with a pronoun like it, he, she, them, etc. They end in -ing. REMEMBER that you must also take any prepositions into account when looking at a gerund phrase!

Examples Running is my favorite activity. My favorite activity is running. You should give running a chance. She likes running. These shoes are for running. Notice anything?

Look at some phrases Running in the street is not permitted. These tickets are for getting into the show. My mother likes cooking in the morning. Ethan and John are running around the gym. The rule is no swimming after eating.
