Ms. Alderson’s Superheroes Open and Closed Syllables 2nd Grade 770-578-7200 Kawanna.Alderson@cobbk12.org Ms. Alderson’s Superheroes Week of August 13, 2018 WEEKLY HOMEWORK A Peek at Our Week Reading: Reading Workshop Launch We will learn what to expect during a reading conference with the teacher, how to reread parts of a book that we don’t understand, and how to read with a partner. Writing Choose a writing prompt from the August writing calendar (homework binder) Math Go to the class webpage, click on “fun links”, then play “Place Value Practice” Practice math facts Math: Place Value We will continue working on 3-digit place value. We will learn how to read and write numbers to 1,000 using standard form, base ten form, word form, and expanded form. Spelling Choose an activity from the Speller’s Choice Board Watch the S.O.S video on the class blog under the “homework resources” tab and practice with your spelling words (you, the, are) Writing: Writing Workshop Launch We will begin writing personal narratives and focusing on small moments when we write. Great writers magnify small moments by adding details. Reading Read 20 minutes Science/SS/Health: Nutrition/Regions of Georgia We will finish up the nutrition unit and begin learning about the Regions of Georgia ((Piedmont, Valley and Ridge, Appalachian Plateau, Blue Ridge Mountains, and Coastal Plain). We will locate and compare the Regions of Georgia & locate rivers on a physical map. S.S./Science Go to the class webpage, click on “fun links”, then “Georgia Regions” Class Blog: http://www.cobblearning.net/Alderson/ Spelling & Word Study Spelling Pattern Language Skill Mark Your Calendar Nouns& Proper Nouns We will notice how nouns are used in our reading and writing. We will also learn how to capitalize proper nouns ( names of people, places, or things) Open and Closed Syllables Open: One vowel followed by no consonants. The syllable is open and the vowel can say its name. Ex: me, hi, no Closed: One vowel followed by one or more consonants. The consonant closes in the syllable like a door, and the vowel is short.
