Personal Achievements to Date Determination of proper materials to fabricate tool out of (in conjunction with Amine) Design of a functional SolidWorks prototype I did the initial research on resistivity, conductivity, availability, and cost of several different materials in order to aid Amine in his performance of the calculations to determine which materials would be most effective and easiest to use. I have developed three versions of the LEC, thus far. They are contained in the following slides.

LEC Biopsy Tool Design And finally… Initial LEC Design LEC Version 2.0 The initial LEC design was pretty much a pair of straight scissors with a triangular box on the ends. 2nd version added a 150 degree angle to the tool to aid in use. 3rd version allowed for a “cookie cutter” effect and decreased the amount of material to use to make the tool, streamlining it for ease of use. And finally… LEC Version 3.0

LEC Version 3.1 Current version of the tool is more streamlined than the previous versions. The 150 degree bend is standard on bent-handle surgical scissors. The top is left open in order to allow for ease of sample removal from the box. The edges of the wedge are rounded for two reasons: the first being to alleviate a potential problem in cauterizing the inside angle of the wound that would have occurred with the initial blade design and the second being ease of fabrication.

Personal Work-To-Do Test SolidWorks prototype for conductive properties using SolidWorks (in conjunction with Amine) Develop part schematics to submit for fabrication Determine the most efficient means to fabricate the device for initial testing SolidWorks prototype must have materials applied to it to give a simulated test to show potential for efficacy before we spend the money to fabricate the device. Schematic drawings of the individual parts and the assemblies must be developed in order to facilitate fabrication. We have scheduled a meeting to meet with Andy Holmes to discuss ways to go about fabrication of the tool. We are also looking into other avenues of fabrication.

Personal Milestones Determination of Materials DONE Development of SolidWorks design Simulated SolidWorks testing HAVE BEGUN PRELIMINARY TESTING Fabrication of LEC prototype PENDING Materials have been determined, based upon the research I did and Amine’s calculations. SolidWorks Version 3.1 is up and running. Initial SolidWorks testing has indicated that the stainless steel will allow for an adequate amount of the high-frequency current to pass through it. Still have to apply the ceramic coating in SolidWorks and see if the program will allow for thermal testing on the inside of the box. We will learn more about fabrication potential this week when we meet with Andy Holmes of the Swanson Center for Product Innovation.
