Branka Petek, Slovenia Gesche Susanna Sutter, Germany BILC Conference 2016, Riga Study Group #2: Portability of STANAG 6001 certificates to civilian contexts Branka Petek, Slovenia Gesche Susanna Sutter, Germany
Portability of STANAG 6001 Certificates to Civilian Contexts The Study Group will: Discuss the complexities of drawing equivalencies from STANAG 6001-based testing systems to systems used in civilian contexts Discuss whether this is a NATO requirement or a national issue. Formulate recommendations for responding to questions on the portability of STANAG 6001 certificates
Initial findings: - portability of the STANAG 6001 into civilian contexts is an issue in many countries but not all - portability often is a matter of making military career more attractive (facilitate recruitment, integration into the civilian workforce) - issue of acceptance in the civilian world remains
Follow-up issues: 1. Should portability work both ways. 2 Follow-up issues: 1. Should portability work both ways? 2. What would we compare STANAG to? (like CEFR, TOEFL…) 3. In what way could comparison be done? (empirical study,….) 4. Is portability a national or BILC issue? 5. How should we proceed?
Conclusions: - portability is a national issue - BILC should provide guidance Recommendations: work towards full recognition of STANAG 6001 certificates in the civilian world How? - establish a BILC working group focusing on * guidance for recognition of STANAG 6001 certificates by military and civilian universities and other civilian institutions * suggestions for a common STANAG 6001 certificate format 5
