Galloping Gertie [Tacoma Narrows Bridge] This bridge was open on July 1, 1940. This bridge is a suspension bridge in Washington state. When they built it they thought they had solved everything, did the right weight and all that, but struggled to get everything started. This bridge was a bridge quite like the Golden Gate Bridge [though built better than gertie].
The Winds Now, wind can become VERY dangerous and Gallopin Gertie is an example of how powerful it can be. The wind was recorded at 38 MPH!! This is very fast for the wind. I mean sure a car goes an average of 60 mph, but this is fast for the wind.
THE CRASH As we all probably wish that this bridge is still built its NOT. This bridge crashed on November 7, 1940. As you can see it didn’t stand that long as we hoped sadly. This bridge was destroyed by wind [very powerful wind]. This bridge got its name “Gallopin Gertie” by the way it was flapping when it was being destroyed [the workers observed this]. The video of the crash should be put in on 45 seconds into the video.
The Architects [designers] So, these builders thought they could make the best bridge ever, make it history, but the world had other plans. They made it history but… it was definitely NOT the best bridge though. In a way you could say they got HALF of what they wanted. Right now you are probably asking who are the builders, well they are: “Leon Moisseiff and Clark Eldridge.”What is impressive is that Clark Eldridge was about 94 when designing the bridge.Leon Moisseiff was about in his mid 40’s.
ANY QUESTIONS? {we didn’t get time to do them] 1.
