Required by state law; mandated by MCPS policy Why Global Screening? Required by state law; mandated by MCPS policy Screen all Grade 2 students Rescreen recommended students in grades 3-5 Screen all new students in grades 3-5 State law says that a gifted and talented student is an elementary or secondary student who has outstanding talent and is performing, or showing the potential to perform, at remarkably high levels of accomplishment, and is identified by professionally qualified individuals. MCPS policy requires that ALL Grade 2 students are screened, and that multiple indicators are considered. Students do not have to be formally identified in order to receive challenging instruction. Accelerated means working on above-grade-level curricula; enriched means working with more in-depth assignments, with creative and critical thinking tasks, for a longer period of time. Global Screening 2012 Multiple Criteria for GT Identification Parent Survey Teacher Survey Staff Advocacy Reading and Math Levels InView― Analogies Subtest InView― Quantitative Reasoning Subtest Raven Additional information The identification process is based on multiple criteria. No single criterion can exclude a student from identification. Use overheads to share each instrument. Parent Survey―An important part of the process. Mailed home. Parents can request translations from their school. Teacher Survey―Survey was re-written to consider all students, note more inclusive language. Staff Advocacy Form―Administrator, ESOL, staff development, reading, arts/music teachers, media specialist, etc., may advocate for individual students. Global screening - parent meeting, Spring 2006

Creating a New Vision It is not about a label. It is about… Access to opportunity―no gatekeeping, no barriers Equity in high expectations for all students Quality of a challenging instructional program Access + Equity + Quality = Success Read slide. Establish the importance of changing attitudes to think of all students when considering giftedness. Emphasize that together staff and parents are crucial to this shared vision. GT COMMITTEE Includes principal, classroom teachers, and other staff in the building, such as ESOL teacher, Resource Teacher, Reading Specialist, Counselor, Staff Development Teacher , Speech Pathologist Collects and analyzes student data Meets to make informed educational decisions that best serve our students’ strengths Makes identification and instructional recommendations using a “Decision Tree” Emphasize team decisions. Decision tree includes two steps. Step One includes performance data and surveys. Step Two includes formal assessments (InView and Raven). There are recommended benchmark scores for each item, but no rigid cut-offs. All parents are informed of the committee’s decision. Students can be reconsidered (re-screened) in subsequent years. POTENTIAL What educators and psychologists recognize as giftedness in children is really potential giftedness, which denotes promise rather than fulfillment and probabilities rather than certainties about future accomplishments.
