Be ahead of the crowd: quality online reading lists with RL@A Andrea Packwood Jane Shelley Subject Librarians – University Library

If one of the central difficulties surrounding reading lists concerns engagement, then it begs the question what approaches might be developed in order to engender greater student engagement with them? (Stokes and Martin, 2008)… Stokes, P. and Martin, L., 2008 Reading lists: a study of tutor and student perceptions, expectations and realities, Studies in Higher Education, 33(2) pp.113-125

ReadingLists@Anglia What is it? Cloud based Interactive and online access to resources System - Talis Aspire Campus Edition Cloud based system enabling academic staff to transform resource discovery and access for learners Talis Aspire Campus Edition is used by over 20% of British universities offering attractive reading lists that are easy to build

ReadingLists@Anglia Benefits Improve student experience Easy to use for academics Q. Why move to online reading and resource lists? A. Students can be frustrated when, as shown by NSS scores for example: Resource lists contain material not available in the library Resource lists have out of date books on them They provide no context or guidance It is difficult to access the material on the list They can’t find a resource list for their module   Online reading lists can help overcome all of these issues. Benefits of online reading lists: Improve student experience - clarity Dynamic reading lists with context Active links for e-resources Better academic experience - accessible Easy to use and better metadata Easy to share and collaborate on list creation Improve independent learning Analytics, metrics & statistics (Dashboard)

Workflow… START Create a profile END Login to the ReadingLists@Anglia system http://readinglists.anglia.ac.uk Set up your profile (note you need a public profile) Install the Bookmarklet button for your browser in “My Bookmarks” (note you can do this for various browsers). Create a list (you will build up a list in a section called “My Lists”) Create bookmarks from the library http://libweb.anglia.ac.uk and other sources [Edit where necessary and save bookmarks] Create additional bookmarks from the rest of the web and other sources if required Structure the list into sections and populate the list with the bookmarks you created earlier Publish the list Attach the list to your module using “Link to Hierarchy” - we will tell you a bit more at the end....
