Dual Credit What Is It? Why Do I Want It? How Can I Get It?

Quick Housekeeping Set cell phone to vibrate! Reserve all questions until the end! Smile! It will warm you up!!!

What Is It? The Dual Credit Program at Johnson allows a student to enroll at San Antonio College (SAC) to earn college level credit while at the same time fulfilling high school academic requirements. Dual Credit classes at Johnson are full year courses. Students can take 2 dual credit classes at Johnson per year.

Why Do I Want It? Its Free!!!! –Tuition and fees are waived for up to two courses per semester. The Dual Credit courses will apply to an associate's degree at San Antonio College and may transfer to other colleges or universities. As with all transferring courses, it is up to the accepting college or university to honor dual credit course work.

Why Do I Want It? Taking DC classes at Johnson means that once you get to college, you have already earned the credit….no AP tests to take in May! Saves your parents big $$$ Challenging course work prepares you for the rigor of college work! Looks great on transcript when applying to college. (If you make good grades!!)

What is the difference between AP and DC? AP Must test in May to possibly earn college credit. Some colleges do not accept AP credit Does cost $ DC Once you finish the class and earn a passing grade, you have college credit. Colleges decide what credit you will earn for your work. (For example, you may be awarded a science elective instead of biology)

What Classes Get DC? English IV AP and English IV AP/GT 6 hours of college credit Biology AP 8 hours of college credit Anatomy and Physiology 8 hours of college credit US History AP 6 hours of college credit American Sign Language III 6 hours of college credit College Algebra 3 hours of college credit Theater Arts 3 hours of college credit

College Course Numbers English IV AP/GT/DC - English 1301/1302 Biology AP/DC - Biology 1406/1407 Anatomy/Physiology DC - Biology 2401/2402 U.S. History AP/DC - Am Hist.1301/1302 American Sign Language - ASL 1301/1302 College Algebra - Math 1314 Theater Arts - Drama 1310

How Do I Qualify? You must have passing scores on one of the following tests! SAT – Reading of 500+ and Math of 500+ with a combined total of 1070 ACT – English 19+, Math 19+, 24+, 26+ (depends on course), Composite 23 **PSAT – Reading 50+, Math 50+ with a combined total of 107 **Can only be used by our current sophomores rising into junior year** Passing Scores on the new TSI Test –TSI: consists of READING, WRITING, MATH. There is a $20 fee (cash or money order) for the TSI. Reading Writing Essay 4/5 Math

What Do I Need to Do? Review all the deadlines and start planning. This process is long and takes time to complete each step and there are often time delays between steps. Thoroughly read all the information on the Johnson Electronic Dual Credit Handbook. There are many resources provided. Meet all the deadlines!! All forms must be electronically submitted by no later than March 5, 2014 (the earlier you can submit them the better )

What Else Might I Need? If you and/or your parent/guardian are: Active duty military or dependent: Complete a Military Verification Form. Resident Alien: Provide a copy of the front and back of the Resident Alien card. Not a U.S. Citizen or Resident Alien: Provide a copy of the front and back of your residency documentation.

DEADLINE: March 5th The following forms must be electronically submitted by March 5 th : Dual Credit Checklist (pg. 14) Alamo Colleges Dual Credit Consent Form (pgs ) Test Score Form (Johnson DC website) Any additional forms that might be needed will have to be hand carried to the Johnson Counseling Office (resident alien card or military verification form)

Test Scores Please electronically submit the Test Score Form with your Dual Credit Forms TSI Scores will be automatically sent to SAC SAT/ACT/PSAT Scores – Johnson will submit an official transcript with those scores on them to SAC

When Do I Start? NOW! Review the Dual Credit Timeline Complete the ApplyTexas application immediately Once you receive your Banner ID#, complete the TSI Registration form electronically and then submit your payment and Test Prep/PAA to the Counseling Office. We will have two initial test dates at Johnson: SATURDAY January 18, 2014 at 8:00 a.m. SATURDAY February 15, 2014 at 8:00 a.m. There will be one official retest date at Johnson: SATURDAY March 22, 2014 at 8:00 a.m. If none of these dates works for you, please contact your counselor for alternate test dates at another NEISD campus.

What Grade Do I Need to Maintain? SAC: You will earn credit as long as you maintain a 70 in the class. Johnson Distinguished Plan: You must maintain an 80 average each semester to earn one advanced measure per semester. One DC class can provide 2 advanced measures!! (except for College Algebra and Theatre Arts)

How Does the Credit Transfer? Student requests a final transcript for delivery to SAC before he/she graduates from Johnson. Student requests a final transcript from SAC to be sent to the university of his/her choice after he/she graduates from Johnson. Start requesting the 3 rd week of June through your ACES account.

Critical Information Students need to understand that once in a Dual Credit class you are beginning a permanent College Transcript. Thus, you want to maintain good grades and should try to make no less than a B in your Dual Credit class. Please be aware of the withdrawal deadlines each semester. Failure to meet the deadlines could result in an F on your college transcript. Certain timeframes will result in a W on your college transcript. Students are only allowed 6 Ws while in college.

Dual Credit Handbook The Dual Credit Handbook will guide you through the entire Dual Credit process. It has a section entitled Frequently Asked Questions which is very helpful!! Please pay attention to the section of FAQs that deals with withdrawing from a Dual Credit class. Johnsons Electronic Dual Credit Handbook is available on the Johnson Counseling website. We have included everything you need to complete this process, however it will require reading through all of the sections thoroughly!!

Remember! Start NOW If you do not earn qualifying scores, you can retest at Johnson on March 22, 2014 or at SAC up until June 12, If you dont earn qualifying scores the first time around, you might want to consider waiting until next year to take a Dual Credit class. The test is a very strong indicator of whether a student can handle the college level material that will be presented in the class.

Currently in a Dual Credit Class? If you have qualifying scores for the courses you want to take in your senior year: You will only need to submit the Dual Credit Checklist, an Alamo Colleges Dual Credit Consent Form, and the Test Score Form. You will NOT have to retest OR reapply!! Start turning them in NOW, so you dont forget!! If you do not currently have the qualifying scores for a certain class, you will have to take the TSI to re-qualify or use SAT/ACT scores. If you only took College Algebra or Theatre this year, you will need to completely start over again as a new student.

ACES This is the system that SAC students use to: –Check courses enrolled in each semester –View grades earned –Request a college transcript Please keep the instructions to log into ACES which is listed in Step 6. We also have information about ACES under SAC Critical Resources. Remember once in DC, a student is creating a permanent College Transcript.
