It will emphasize the use of limits while searching in PubMed. Again, this will build on searching skills you have learned in previous modules. Similarly to the other modules, you will need access to the Internet and be required to complete a series of exercises. You must login to HINARI and then go to ‘Search inside HINARI full-text using PubMed’ or you will not have access to the full-text articles 03 March 2018
Before logging into the PubMed, websites, we will Login to the HINARI site using the URL http://www.who.int/hinari/ 03 March 2018
Enter your HINARI USER NAME and PASSWORD in the appropriate boxes, change the language of the portal (if necessary), then click on the Login button. Note: To have access to the full text articles, you must properly sign in. 03 March 2018
Click on the Hinari logo to open the program. All the programs your institution is registered for are listed. Login to any of the other programs by returning to this page (use the R4L Portal – Applications tab at the top of the web browser). To open another program, click on the specific logo. Your Hinari username and password will grant access to the other programs (and ditto for your institution’s AGORA, ARDI GOALI or OARE logins). 06 March 2018

PubMed Filters We will examine the numerous Filters options – which enable you to refine (or expand) a search as precisely or broadly as you would like. From the initial (HINARI) PubMed page, we will run the HIV and pregnancy search and then apply various Filters. 03 March 2018 8
After completion of a search, the default Filters are displayed in a left-column frame. We will apply different Filters to the results of the HIV and pregnancy search - a total of 17258 citations. In many cases, you will need to click on More – to add other filter options than the ones from the default listing. 03 March 2018
Initially we will apply the Publication dates filter Initially we will apply the Publication dates filter. We have clicked on the 5 years option. This limits the search results to 3932. Note the check mark next to Publication Dates section. Also note clear icon. There is a Clear all option at the bottom of the page. If you do not clear your options, they will be applied to future searches. Remember – clear the filters if you DO NOT want them on any subsequent searches. If you do not clear your filters, future search could be significantly more limited. 03 March 2018
In the Custom Date Range filter, enter the first date of 2017 range to date (2017/01/01 to blank) and click on the Apply icon. 03 March 2018
By using a 2017 01 01 Custom Date Range filter, there are 384 citations for HIV AND pregnancy search. Below the results, there is the Filters activated line that includes the Clear all option. The specific Filters Activated is noted with a check mark. We will click on the Clear option to remove this . You also can click on the specific filter. 03 March 2018
We have cleared all the Filters and the results of the HIV and pregnancy search are the initial number of 17258 citations. 03 March 2018
Click on the Show additional filters link and now will check the Languages box and click on Show. 03 March 2018
Click on Customize to display the drop down menu of Languages filters Click on Customize to display the drop down menu of Languages filters. Note that English is the default language and more than one can be checked. To add filters to the left-column list (and be able to apply them to a search), you will need to check the boxes and click on the show button. This is necessary for many of the filter options. 03 March 2018
Now opened is the customize… option for Article types and opened the drop down menu. Add Review and Practice Guidelines article types and click on Show. As previously noted, checking specific boxes and the show button results in the sub-filters adds the filters you want included with the broader term – in this case Article types. 03 March 2018
In the Article types, click on the Practice Guidelines and Review options. The results of the HIV and pregnancy search are 2728 citations. Clear all the filters. 03 March 2018
Click on/open Show additional filters and the drop down menu has been displayed. Add the Ages option by checking the box and clicking on Show. This is a two step process. First, click on Show addtional filters (to display Ages) and, within the Ages filters, to choose the options you would like to use. 03 March 2018
By clicking on customize… in the Ages filters, all the options are displayed. For the HIV and pregnancy search, check the Adolescent: 13-18 years and Young Adult:19-24 years boxes and click on Show. Once displayed, click on the new Ages filters. 03 March 2018
The two Ages filters are checked and highlighted and HIV and pregnancy search is reduced to 4699 citations. Below the results, there is the Filters activated line that includes the Clear all option. Again – remember to clear the filters or they will remain on for subsequent searches. 03 March 2018

A new drop down menu is displayed A new drop down menu is displayed. Highlight the Affiliation option and click on Apply. After this filter is activated, type WHO in the PubMed search box and click on Search. For all the Fields filters, you will need to put a keyword search in the PubMed search box and click on Search. For this Affiliation search, we have added WHO, the acronym for the World Health Organization. Similarly, you can check Journals and type a journal title into the Search box or check the Author option and enter the name of an author in the Search box. 03 March 2018

Now activate the journal Search field filter, enter emerging infectious diseases in the PubMed search box and click on Apply. This is a useful tool for identifying material from one journal. In this case, we have listed all the articles from Emerging Infectious Diseases, an open access e-journal from the Centers for Disease Control (USA). These options are discussed in the following slides. 03 March 2018
The results of the emerging infectious diseases journal affiliation search are 8456 citations. This search lists the total number of articles from this journal in PubMed. Remember to clear this Journal search field filter. 03 March 2018
Activate the Author Search field filter, enter ribeiro in the PubMed search box and click on Apply. 03 March 2018

In this example the Free full text available filter has been activated In this example the Free full text available filter has been activated. The search results are 4978 citations. This lower number includes 2113 HINARI citations but these are HINARI/Free Full Text articles only. Therefore, we recommend not using these filters. 03 March 2018
Reminder: While working with Filters, you probably noticed the line that Text availability Filter that has the Abstract, Free full text, Full text available options. By clicking on these options, you would filter your search to include all articles with abstracts or full text articles or those articles that are available as free full text by various publishers or those citations that have abstracts. Note: if you click only on Free full text and NOT Full text, your HINARI tab will be limited to only articles that are both free full text and HINARI – a significantly less #. 03 March 2018
