Dark Water Rising Test Review

What genre is the novel Dark Water rising Historical fiction Dark Water rising is based on the 1900 Galveston hurricane

What is symbolism? Symbolism is the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense For example: The dove is a symbol of peace

What is personification? Why do authors use personification? the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form. Authors use personification to make stories/ poems more dramatic and interesting or to convey a certain mood. Personification also helps us to relate more to the object or idea that is being personified because it is easier for us to relate to something with human attributes.

What is a metaphor? A metaphor is a figure of speech that refers to something as being the same as another thing for rhetorical effect. It may provide clarity or identify hidden similarities between two ideas. Where a simile compares two items, a metaphor directly equates them, and does not use "like" or "as" as does a simile.

What is a simile? A simile is a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid (e.g., as brave as a lion, crazy like a fox).

What is imagery? visually descriptive or figurative language

Why does an author use italics? To show Emphasis: "Smith wasn't the only guilty party, it's true". Sometimes in novels to indicate a character's thought process: "This can't be happening, thought Mary."

Conflict in Literature Man Versus Man These sort of conflicts are the most common. Your characters will be opposed by or will oppose the actions, reactions, motivations of another character or characters. Man Versus Nature Nature serves as the obstacle for characters. Ex: tsunami, hurricane, tornado Man Versus Self Internal issues that affect their actions, motivations and interactions with other characters. The conflict can be a recurring theme throughout the story or at a particular point in time. Man Versus Society These are conflicts where your characters’ firm beliefs are against norms that the entire society as a whole endorses. It could be social evils or discrimination practiced by society that is opposed by a minority.
