Figure 1 GLP-1 agonists increase β-cell mass in rodents. GLP-1–dependent effects on β-cell proliferation include activation of phosphatidylinositol-3 (PI3) kinase, AKT, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), protein kinase Cζ, the src kinase, and the epidermal growth factor receptor.15 Similar trophic mechanisms have been implicated in the pathogenesis of pancreatic cancer and activation of those mechanisms in cancer progenitor cells might be detrimental.
