Today’s lesson... What: Scientific Notation Why: To convert between numbers written in scientific notation and numbers written in standard form.
Scientific Notation Lesson 9-lab. What is scientific notation? It is a method that scientists use to express very large and very small numbers. We use.
Scientific Notation = = 10 x 10 = = 10 x 10 x 10 = 1000.
Warm-up. 4.9 Scientific Notation: Part I Positive Exponents Objective: To write and evaluate numbers in scientific notation and to calculate using scientific.
Scientific Notation. A number is in scientific notation when There is a number (I’ll call “n”) that is bigger than or equal to one, but less than ten.

NYS Mathematics Standards: 7.N.5, 7.N.6 Prior Knowlege: 100 = 101 = October 21, 2009 Math 102 Objective: Students will write numbers in scientific notation and translate numbers from scientific notation into standard form. Aim: What are the two factors that we use to represent scientific notation? NYS Mathematics Standards: 7.N.5, 7.N.6 Prior Knowlege: 100 = 101 = 102 = 103 = 104 =

In scientific notation, there are always 2 factors. Mini-lesson: Powers of 10 are used to abbreviate very large numbers. This way of writing numbers is called scientific notation. It is commonly used in scientific and medical fields. In scientific notation, there are always 2 factors. 1st factor = a number greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10 2nd factor = a power of 10 Examples: 3 x 106 6.5 x 1012 Standard Form Scientific Notation 1,000 (one thousand 1 x 103 1,000,000 (one million) 1 x 106 1,000,000,000 (one billion) 1 x 109

Example: Write 670,000,000 using scientific notation. Place a decimal point after the first digit. Write the first factor by using the two non-zero digits of the number. The first factor is 6.7 Count the number of digits to the right of the first digit in the number. There are 8 digits after the first digit. Because there are 8 places to the right of the first digit, the second digit is 108. Write the two factors together: 670,000,000 = 6.7 x 108

Group Practice: Write in scientific notation: 5,600,000,000 3,000 2,670,000 Independent Practice: Write in scientific notation: 200 9,783,000,000 45,980 Homework: Worksheet problems #1 - 8
