What is ‘Engineering’? Watch the video and think about what the purpose of ‘Engineering is, and what this course may cover? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBGsBlDQnzA

TEEP Agree the Learning Outcomes Learning Objectives To gain an understanding into the Engineering course and the meaning of the term “Engineering”. These issues affect all aspects of the course and should be considered throughout it.

Learning Outcomes Progress – Identify the different engineering sectors Good Progress – Describe the different engineering sectors Exceptional Progress – Compare and Contrast the different engineering sectors

Electrical/Electronic Engineering Sectors Aerospace Automotive Communications Electrical/Electronic Mechanical Biomedical Chemical

Aerospace Engineering Aerospace engineering is the primary branch of engineering concerned with the research, design, development, construction, testing, science and technology of aircraft and spacecraft. It is divided into two major and overlapping branches: aeronautical engineering and astronautical engineering. The former deals with aircraft that operate in Earth's atmosphere, and the latter with spacecraft that operate outside it.

Automotive Engineering Modern automotive engineering, is a branch of vehicle engineering, the design, manufacture and operation of motorcycles, automobiles, buses and trucks and their respective engineering subsystems.

Communications Engineering Communications engineering is an engineering discipline that brings together electrical engineering with computer science to enhance telecommunication systems. The work ranges from basic circuit design to mass developments. A telecommunication engineer is responsible for designing and overseeing the installation of telecommunications equipment and facilities, such as complex electronic switching systems, copper wire telephone facilities, and fibre optics. Telecommunication engineering also overlaps heavily with broadcast engineering.

Electrical Engineering Electrical engineering is a field of engineering that generally deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism.

Mechanical Engineering Mechanical engineering is a discipline of engineering that applies the principles of physics and materials for analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. It is one of the oldest and broadest engineering disciplines.

Biomedical Engineering Biomedical engineering (BME) is the application of engineering principles and design concepts to medicine and biology for healthcare purposes. This field seeks to close the gap between engineering and medicine: It combines the design and problem solving skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences to advance healthcare treatment.

Chemical Engineering Chemical engineering is the branch of engineering that applies the physical sciences chemistry and physics and/or life sciences biology, microbiology and biochemistry together with mathematics to convert raw materials or chemicals into more useful or valuable forms.

Construct a table which briefly summarises each sector of engineering that has been discussed. Type of Engineering Description Aerospace Automotive Communications Electrical/Electronic Mechanical Biomedical Chemical

When undertaking written questions, the way in which you present you work needs to demonstrate quality in written communication. Text should be legible. Text should be formal language written in full sentences. Spelling, punctuation and grammar are accurate so that meaning is clear. Present information in a form that suits its purpose. Use an appropriate style of writing. Use specialist terminology accurately. With this in mind work independently to answer the following questions.

Identify an engineering sector (1 mark) ……………………………………………………… Describe the type of work undertaken by your chosen sector (3 marks) ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… Compare and contrast your chosen engineering sector to a different sector (6 marks) ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Progress – Identify the different engineering sectors Good Progress – Describe the different engineering sectors Exceptional Progress – Compare and Contrast the different engineering sectors

Extension Working in groups collect examples of products produced by each of the 7 engineering sectors.
