Presentation transcript:

CH 5-3: A new Stereoisomer - Diastereomers Enantiomers are a pair of stereoisomers that have at least one chiral carbon and are “mirror images” (R vs S). What happens if you have more than one chiral carbon? (2S, 3S) (2R, 3R) Enantiomers of 2,3-dibromopentane

Another set of Enantiomers of 2,3-dibromopentane: (2S, 3R)

All 2,3-dibromopentane stereoisomers: Enantiomers Enantiomers (2S, 3S) (2R, 3R) (2R, 3S) (2S, 3R) But, how are the following related? 2R,3S vs 2S,3S 2R,3S vs 2R,3R 2S,3R vs 2S,3S 2S,3R vs 2R,3R

Diastereomers: compounds with two or more chiral centers, they are stereoisomers, but are NOT mirror images. (2S, 3S) (2R, 3R) (2R, 3S) (2S, 3R) Enantiomers: same chemical and physical properties. Diastereomers: different chemical and physical properties. We can predict the maximum number of stereoisomers: max = 2n where n = # chiral carbons
