An evidence based approach to policing Mike Smith

An evidence based approach Identifying, developing and promoting practice based on evidence Used to challenge and improve the way policing is delivered The College of Policing has responsibility for ensuring that the standards set in policing are based on the best available evidence.

Examples of evidence based approaches The use of body-worn video cameras during attendance at domestic abuse incidents The deployment of mounted officers in Gloucestershire

Examples of evidence based approaches The use of body-worn video cameras during attendance at domestic abuse incidents The deployment of mounted officers in Gloucestershire The impact of codes of ethics on behaviour

Evidence based approaches Collated by the College of Policing in the “What Works Centre for Crime Reduction” The centre includes the Crime Reduction Toolkit to assist in creating an evidence base.

Crime reduction toolkit

“Scared straight programmes” Organised visits to prison facilities for juvenile delinquents or children at risk of becoming delinquent Programmes include confrontational sessions in which adult inmates share graphic stories about prison life with the juveniles Do these programmes work?

“Scared straight programmes” The Crime Reduction Toolkit provides access to the crime reduction evidence base Overall, the evidence suggests that the intervention has increased juvenile offending

….from public order….

….to academia?

“Experience isn’t a dirty word” Commander, Metropolitan Police Service

Review of practice Published by the College of Policing and listed in the National Police library as an open source document

Contribution? Contributed to the research discussion – provides another view of the area of policing protest Provided a voice to all those engaged in the policing of protest events; police commanders, PLT, members of protest groups and employees of local businesses Produced considerations for National Police POPS in policing future protest events

Summary What works in policing? What doesn’t? How do we know? “Reinventing the wheel!” How do we learn from what other police forces have implemented? How do we gather and record the experiences of police officers and forces throughout UK and beyond? Can your work make a difference?
