Figure 1 The two-compartment model of body composition Figure 1 | The two-compartment model of body composition. According to this model, the human body is divided into a fat component and a fat-free component. Body fat can be further divided into two categories, namely essential fat and storage fat. Essential fat is necessary for normal body functioning. Subcutaneous storage fat provides body protection and insulates the body to conserve heat. Internal storage fat protects organs from injury. The fat-free component comprises water, protein, minerals and glycogen. The amount of water in the adult human body ranges from 50–65%. Buttgereit, F. & Burmester, G. R.
