Player / Parent Information LAVA Volleyball Club 2018-19 Player / Parent Information

Club History and Philosophy LAVA Volleyball Club was formed in 2011 to address the needs of Livingston County parents and girls to have a club that: Is reasonably priced and doesn’t require travel outside of New York to play Allows players to focus on school sports first ahead of club requirements. LAVA Volleyball Club believes it has developed a good formula for players wishing to improve their volleyball skills after the season and still be able to participate in other sports with their schools.

Goals To provide a quality learning environment for players to be able to improve on their volleyball skills while still allowing them to focus on school and family activities.

How it works! Teams formed based on try-out turnout Projected to field 6 to 7 teams this season Teams play in 6 to 8 local tournaments (between Buffalo & Rochester) Practice: 1 night per week starting in November Held at Cal-Mum High School gym on Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays - 7:30 to 9:30pm or on Wednesday’s 6:30-8:30 at Faith Community Church Age group practices posted as soon as team selections are determined.

2 Open Tryout Sessions Per Age Group Sunday, October 28, 2018 AND Sunday, November 4, 2018 @ Caledonia-Mumford High School Gym 12U, 13U, & 14 U 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. 15U & 16 U 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. 17U & 18U 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. Determine the correct age level for your daughter by answering the question: How old will my daughter be on August 31, 2019?

Tryouts (continued) Sessions monitored by volunteer coaches and advisors Evaluations based on the following attributes: Individual volleyball skills Team volleyball play ability “Coachability” Work ethic and effort Overall volleyball potential Position availability and need Tournament and practice availability

Tryouts (continued) All coaches help decide where a player is ultimately placed LAVA holds multiple tryout sessions understanding that all players have "bad days" and one session may not allow a player to adequately represent herself

Tryouts (continued) All players must come to the age group tryout they qualify for the 1st day (If coaches feel that a player should move up, that will be discussed with parents.) After tryouts teams will be selected (Depending on skill levels, there is a chance that a team will not have 12 players.) LAVA has room for a maximum of 12 players per team in three or four age groups Players will be notified by e-mail as to whether they made a team

Registration Process Online Computer Registration Prior to attending registration on the 1st tryout date, all players must: 1.) be registered with WEVA online ($15 WEVA tryout fee) click on Registration to go to the WEVA site. print out, complete  and bring the WEVA medical release to the 1st tryout, click on WEVA Medical Release 2.) complete the Tryout sign-up link on lavavbc.org ($10 tryout fee). If you go to our web site the links will take you to the WEVA Page

Registration Process All players MUST register with the Western Empire Volleyball Association (WEVA) WEVA is our local tie to USA Volleyball Provides insurance coverage Sanctions clubs and tournaments If previously registered with another club, bring a copy of your membership card to try-outs. Players selecting LAVA after making a team, pay the balance of the WEVA registration directly to WEVA - $49 IF YOU HAVEN’T REGISTERED YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TRYOUT!

What about costs? LAVA… Try-Out Fee $10 if you have not already paid online through the LAVA web portal is due the 1st tryout. Club Fees A payment of $215 (for uniforms, equipment, and administrative costs) is due upon making a team Tournament fees (amount to be determined based on the tournaments the team attends) will be collected in 3 installments – due January, February, and March Each team will play in 6-8 tournaments (tournament sheets given to each player to indicate availability – costs range between $35 for a 1-day tournament to $75 for 2-day tournaments) Each player pays tournament fees that the team is attending

What about costs? LAVA… (continued) Example of team fees for our 18U 2017-18 Please note: example based on attending 8 local tournaments and is subject to change. Final total cost to be determined based on tournament selection and costs associated with those tournaments WEVA $ 64 Tryout Fee $ 10 Club Fee (1st payment) $215 Tournament Fees (collected in 3 payments) $400 TOTAL COST $689

What about playing time? Playing time is important to us as it is to every player Main reason teams will have no more than 12 players Club fees go toward practice time and instruction by qualified, experienced coaches, NOT playing time in tournaments Guarantee a ‘fair’ amount of playing time for every player; this does not necessarily mean an ‘equal’ amount When considering the amount of playing time that your daughter is receiving , a comparison must be made among players that play the same position

What about playing time? More playing time is earned by: regularly being at practice attending tournaments working hard to improve fostering team relationships demonstrating good sportsmanship, and executing the skills when given the opportunity to play

What about playing time? (continued) Coaches are advised to give everyone fair opportunities to contribute their skills and abilities during tournament pool play matches. When a team advances past pool play, it is the coaches’ discretion and decision to reward players that have excelled during pool play with playing time in these final matches.

Practice and Tournament Attendance. Our philosophy is that family comes 1st, school 2nd and club next. We also want to be fair to other players and coaches. It is hard to plan practices when we only get 5 or 6 players. We need a commitment from the player to be at our practices.

Practice and Tournament Attendance. Check over the tournament schedule carefully before signing up with a yes. Check proms, family weddings, HS Sports schedules, work schedules. If you sign up you are committing to the team & coaches that you will be there.

Wrap Up Our focus is about achieving goals and improving in all areas of volleyball, not solely about winning tournaments.
