Using Foldable Notes to Synthesize SYNTHESIS: Multiple Genres
Instructions for foldable Fold sheet of paper in a “hot dog fold” Open paper so that you can see the crease Fold each side of the crease bringing the outside edge to the middle crease Fold the bottom edge up about 1/3 of the way On the bottom flap, write the focus question: “What motivates a person to attempt a task that others consider dangerous or impossible?”
Instructions for foldable Write “key points” at the top of the left outside flap Write “examples” at the top of the right outside flap At the top of the right inside flap, write “textual support” At the top of the left inside flap, write “thesis statement”
Recording procedures After reading each selection and marking text that supports your position, on the inside flap under “textual support,” record quotes or paraphrase quotes that support the key points
Refining your position After you have read the texts, refine your position statement by completing the following: a. “I still believe that …” b. “Although these texts have persuaded me that ___, I still believe that …” c. “The most important questions that these texts brought to my attention are ___” d. “The insights that I have gotten from these texts are that ___” You may find the need to add more to your list of “key Points” after you read the selections.
