Revolutionary War Study Guide Review

Boycott A protest in which people refuse to buy certain items until specific conditions are met.

Smuggling To illegally import goods or illegally trade with another nation or country.

Liberty Boys A group of Georgians who opposed the Stamp Act; part of the larger Sons of Liberty.  

Militias A citizen army

Patriots Those colonists who wanted independence from Great Britain; also called Whigs, Liberty boys, Colonists, Sons and Daughters of Liberty

Tories Those colonists who were loyal to the British crown’ also called Loyalists, British Royalists, and “King’s friends”

What were the causes of the American Revolutionary War? Land – Ohio River Valley (French and Indian War) Fought over area because it was a valuable trading region and the colonies wanted to expand to the other side of the Allegheny Mountains. (Proclamation of 1763) Taxes – Great Britain taxes the colonies in order to pay off debt from the French and Indian War. Acts – Stamp Act – tax on newspapers, legal documents, and licenses. Sugar Act – tax on sugar and molasses imported from the West Indies. Quartering Act – Citizens of all colonies had to house and feed British soldiers at their own expense. Townshend Acts – placed import taxes on tea, paper, glass, and coloring for paints Intolerable Acts - British closed the port of Boston, no town meetings without the agreement of the governor, British officials who committed capital crimes would be tried in Great Britain rather than by a colonial court. Events – Boston Massacre – British soldiers being heckled and having snowballs thrown at them, fired into a crowd, killing 5 civilians Boston Tea Party – Patriots, protesting the tea tax, dressed up like Mohawk Indians and boarded three British ships anchored in Boston harbor, and dumped 342 chests of tea into Boston Bay.
