Celebrating the Servant-Savior: The Gospel of Isaiah Jason S. DeRouchie, PhD Professor of OT and Biblical Theology Bethlehem College & Seminary www.derouchie-meyer.org Bethlehem Baptist Church, 2016

Isaiah 6:1–13 Outline: Yahweh’s holiness with its consequence for Isaiah’s (and his people’s) doom (6:1b–5) Yahweh’s atonement, bringing cleansing and restoration (6:6–8) Yahweh’s program and Isaiah’s place within it (6:9–13)

God’s holiness and glory (6:1–7) Key texts: Exod. 15:11. Who is like you, O Yahweh, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders? 1 Sam. 2:2. There in none holy like Yahweh; there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God. Ps. 77:13. Your way, O God, is holy. What god is great like our God? Isa. 40:25. “To whom then will you compare me, that I should be like him?” says the Holy One.

Glory: The visual display of God’s holiness Holiness: The “Godness of God”––The reality and value of God’s fullness, expressed in: His self-sustainability His absoluteness and soleness His excellence and worth The beautiful harmony of all his acts with his fulness Glory: The visual display of God’s holiness

The Mission (6:8–13) The nature of the mission (6:8–10) Matt. 13:14–15. Indeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says: “You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will indeed see but never perceive.” For this people’s heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.”

John 12:39–41. Therefore they could not believe John 12:39–41. Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said, 40 “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.” 41 Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him. Cf. Acts 28:25–27 See Isa 29:9–11, 18–19; Rom 11:7–10

Is. 29:9–11, 18–19. Astonish yourselves and be astonished; blind yourselves and be blind! Be drunk, but not with wine; stagger, but not with strong drink! 10 For the LORD has poured out upon you a spirit of deep sleep, and has closed your eyes (the prophets), and covered your heads (the seers). 11 And the vision of all this has become to you like the words of a book that is sealed. When men give it to one who can read, saying, “Read this,” he says, “I cannot, for it is sealed.” … 18 In that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book, and out of their gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind shall see. 19 The meek shall obtain fresh joy in the LORD, and the poor among mankind shall exult in the Holy One of Israel.

Rom. 11:7–8. What then. Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking Rom. 11:7–8. What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened, 8 as it is written, “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear, down to this very day.”

The timing of the mission (6:11–13)
