IE 486 Work Analysis & Design II Lecture 15 – Lab 3 discussion & brief review of Work Physiology Dr. Vincent G. Duffy Tuesday March 21, 2007

Administrative update Today we left time to answer questions about the lab 3 that is due on Thursday. Discussion about Digital Human Modeling, originally scheduled for today, is postponed. This material will be discussed both on class and in lab by the time we introduce the related project. The brief lecture after the Q&A on lab 3 will focus on reviewing Work Physiology (which follows – can be considered with - Biomechanics and Anthropometry). This helps to provide connection between different physical aspects of work design (in chapters 10, 11 and 12) that could be incorporated into the analyses that will be available to you in the UGS version of the digital human modeling software tools that we will use during the project. L15 Work Physiology

IE486 – Lecture 13 - QOTD QOTD 1. The figure 12.5 shows the energy expenditure rate as a function of a. time b. performance c. heart rate d. all of the above e. none of the above or QOTD 2. The figure 12.7 is based on an article from the journal Ergonomics and shows work capacity as a function of e. none of the above

Recall from IE386 some aspects of Work Physiology; See also p. 308-318 in text by Wickens et al. as well as conclusions on p.322-323 This figure shows energy expenditure rate as a function of time. Energy expenditure varies with changing task requirements, and these can be quantified for physical work based on research from the 70’s and 80’s. This figure is based on an article from the journal Ergonomics and shows work capacity as a function of time It is important to recognize that the expected duration of work (requirements) influence our maximum physical work capacity.

End of material to be covered on exam 2
