HOW DO WE GET PEOPLE TO FOLLOW NORMS? SOCIAL CONTROL HOW DO WE GET PEOPLE TO FOLLOW NORMS?

WHY DOES ANYONE FOLLOW RULES? POSSIBLE REASONS INCLUDE: SELF CONTROL? WE THINK THEY ARE FAIR? WE WANT OTHERS TO FOLLOW THEM? PUNISHMENT? FEAR OF BEING CAUGHT? SHAME?

THE PILLORY --- THE STOCKADE THIS 13TH CENTURY INVENTION WAS USED TO PUNISH LIARS. DEVICE HAS MULTIPLE VARIATIONS.

BARBARIC PRACTICES THAT DON’T EXIST IN MODERN LAW AND SOCIETY… RIGHT? 32 YEARS OLD – S. HARDIN DROVE AROUND A STOPPED SCHOOL BUS WHICH WAS LETTING OFF STUDENTS. BAD ENOUGH, BUT SHE WENT UP ON THE SIDEWALK TO DO SO. $250 FINE, 30-DAY LICENSE SUSPENSION. ALSO ORDERED TO STAND AT AN INTERSECTION FOR AN HOUR, ON 2 DIFFERENT DAYS. IS THIS JUST? DOES THE PUNISHMENT FIT THE CRIME?

THERE ARE ENTIRE WEBSITES THAT CATER TO THIS NEW FORM OF SHAMING, THE VIRTUAL PILLORY

REMEMBER NORMS? – shared rules of conduct NORMS ARE ENFORCED THROUGH 2 METHODS INTERNALIZATION – PROCESS IN WHICH A NORM BECOMES A PART OF AN INDIVIDUAL'S PERSONALITY THE RESULT IS THAT A PERSON IS CONDITIONED TO BEHAVE A CERTAIN WAY, WITHOUT THINKING ABOUT IT. ACTIONS ARE NOT BASED ON FEAR OF PUNISHMENT – JUST ABSORPTION OF THE NORM

SECOND WAY THAT NORMS ARE UPHELD SOME PEOPLE CAN’T OR WON’T INTERNALIZE SOCIETY’S NORMS. THEY MUST BE MOTIVATED BY SANCTIONS. SANCTIONS – REWARDS OR PUNISHMENTS THAT ENFORCE CONFORMITY TO NORMS.

SANCTIONS SANCTIONS ONLY WORK IF THE OUTCOMES ARE FOLLOWED. POSITIVE SANCTIONS NEGATIVE SANCTIONS REWARDS A PARTICULAR BEHAVIOR USUALLY INTRODUCED IN EARLY LIFE CONTINUE IN TO ADOLESCENCE AND ADULTHOOD EX.) GOOD GRADES, BONUSES, AWARDS, AND CHEERING DISCOURAGES PARTICULAR BEHAVIOR PUNISHMENT OR THE THREAT OF PUNISHMENT THREATS ARE SOMETIMES MORE EFFECTIVE THEN THE ACTUAL PUNISHMENT EX.)
