Vocabulary Industrialization The change to industrial methods of production such as the use of factories Raw Materials Various materials found in nature used in manufacturing such as wood, coal, and oil Balance of power A political policy in which countries attempt to preserve peace by keeping an equal military and economic status. Culture The shared beliefs, customs, practices, and social behavior of a particular nation or people Cultural diffusion The spreading of ideas through contact such as trade or war Colonialism The policy of maintaining colonies as a source of raw materials and new markets

3) Why did IMPERIALISM begin? A) Nations began looking outside of their borders for cheaper more abundant resources B) Nations began looking for places where goods could be produced cheaply C) Foreign places were seen as potential markets

Nationalism Definition: pride in one’s country D) Citizens so proud of their country they thought they should take over other countries E) As European countries became competitive, there was increased pressure to practice imperialism in order to maintain a balance of power in Europe

White Man’s Burden F) The Europeans’ sense of superiority made them feel obligated to “civilize the heathen savages” they encountered. Social Darwinism belief that all human groups compete for survival, and that the stronger groups will replace the weaker groups

Causes of Imperialism Economic Motives The Industrial Revolution created a demand for raw materials and new markets. Nationalism European nations wanted to demonstrate their power and prestige to the world. Balance of Power European nations were forced to acquire new colonies to achieve a balance with their neighbors and competitors. White Man's Burden The Europeans’ sense of superiority made them feel obligated to “civilize the heathen savages” they encountered.

4) Results of IMPERIALISM A) Short term: very profitable but came at the expense of the foreign country where imperialism was being practiced B) Cultural diffusion: an exchange of ideas between the WEST and the EAST C) Spread of European ideas such as democracy D) COLONIALISM throughout the world, especially after WW2
