Blogging Is that really a word?

A short history It began as WEB LOG  Two professors from Bond University in Australia introduced the term in 1995 at a conference introducing their paper “Exploiting the World-Wide Web for Electronic Meeting Document Analysis and Management””

the paper itself was aimed at the recording of electronic meetings, but the processes described what eventually turned into todays blogs. There were chat rooms during this time that were similar to blogs but you had to be a member of the room to add information Robotwisdom.com is an example of an original web log which started in 1997

The origins of modern blogging are argued about almost as much as the question….What is blogging? One thing is for sure blogs began as websites or webpages that provided links and comments to other pages, and its is from this basis that modern blogs emerged.

In early 1999 Peter Merholz coins the term blog after announcing he was going to pronounce web blogs as “wee-blog”, that was then shortened to blog.

In August 1999, Pyra Labs, today owned by Google, launches the free Blogger blogging service, that for the first time provides an easy set of tools for anyone to set up a blog. Other services launched around the same time include Pitas and Groksoup.

For Every Season… Why people write blogs …….well for anything: Let the world know what you think even if no one cares advertising Make money Information ASSESSMENT The list goes on and on

Why should I care? Picture this: I have asked the kids to take an eco- footprint quiz online. normally they hand me a sheet of paper with the results now they add their results to the blog and respond to what others have written as well We discuss all results on screen a as a class

Advantages No paper needed Grade immediately as you discuss with class Immediate feedback Responses to others promotes critical thinking Uses the students love of technology to promote writing skills Great for visual and kinesthetic learners

Disadvantages Firewalls not allowing access Students not having internet service

Remember… It takes some time to maintain a blog so only set one up f you really have a stake in what you are putting out there.
