Knowing basic image editing techniques for bitmap images Knowing basic image editing techniques for bitmap images. Such as adjusting brightness and contrast and applying filters, gives you a foundation of skills for your Web graphics work. You can add a few special techniques to your skill set by learning to modify images with the Burn, Dodge, Smudge, and Rubber Stamp tools. Exercise 27 - Skills

Exercise 27 - Terms Brightness – The amount of light in an image. Contrast – The difference between the light and dark areas of an image. Filters – Enhancements you can add to objects in a Fireworks document Exercise 27 - Terms

Basic Image Editing Techniques You can apply filters to bitmap objects, vector objects, or text objects. When you apply a filter by using the Filters menu, the filter is destructive, meaning the change is made to the object instantly and you cannot modify the properties of the filter. You can also apply live filters by using the Property inspector. When you use a live filter, you can continue to work with and modify the settings of the filter. The Rubber Stamp tool enables you to create a kind of “rubber stamp” of a selected area of your image so that you can apply the same effect to other areas of the document. You begin by selecting the Rubber Stamp tool. Choose the brush size and edge softness in the Property inspector. Then press the Alt Key as you click the place you want to copy. A blue crosshair appears at the point you clicked. Click and drag to make the copy. The copy destination appears marked with a blue circle, and you can paint the image with the selected portion of the object. The Rubber Stamp tool is a good tool to take the time and demonstrate to the students. They have a hard time figuring this tool out on their own. Filters are ready-made effects you can add to objects in a Fireworks document. The Burn tool darkens a part of an image; the Dodge tool lightens a part of an image. Adjust Brightness and Contrast You make changes to the brightness and contrast of your bitmap images by choosing Adjust Color and then Brightness/Contrast from the Filters menu. In the Brightness/Contrast dialog box, drag the sliders to adjust the color and brightness. You can also type a specific value in the boxes if you choose. Make sure you leave the Preview checkbox selected so that you can immediately see the effect of your changes. Adjust Brightness and Contrast

A filter enables you to add a ready-made enhancement to the selection. You can apply filters to bitmap objects, vector objects, or text objects. When you apply a filter by using the Filters menu, the filter is destructive, meaning the change is made to the object instantly and you cannot modify the properties of the filter. Use Ctrl+Z or the Edit>Indo menu command to reverse a filter effect you don’t like. You can also apply filters by using the Property Inspector. Apply Filters

Sharpen and Blur an Image Sharpening an image helps bring a fuzzy object into focus. The Sharpen tool is one of the hidden tools found behind the blur tool in the Bitmap section of the Tools panel. Blurring an image is the opposite of sharpening. Sharpen and Blur an Image

Sharpen and Blur an Image Fireworks includes six different blur filters: Blur Blur More Gaussian Blur Motion Blur Radial Blur Zoom Blur Sharpen and Blur an Image

Use the Burn and Dodge Tools The Burn tool and the Dodge tool are hidden tools behind the Blur tool. The Burn tool darkens a part of the image. The Dodge tool lightens a part of the image. Use burn and Dodge tools to adjust selected areas of an image. Use the Burn and Dodge Tools

Use the Rubber Stamp Tool The Rubber Stamp tool enables you to create a kind of “rubber stamp” of a selection area of your image so you can apply the same effect to other areas of the document. You begin by selecting the Rubber Stamp tool. Choose the brush size and edge softness in the Property Inspector. Then press Alt as you click the place you want to copy. A blue crosshair appears at the point you clicked. Click and drag to make the copy. The copy destination appears marked with a blue circle, and you can paint the image with the selected portion of the object. Use the Rubber Stamp Tool

The Smudge tool blends nearby objects by pushing colors together at the pointer position. You might want to use the Smudge tool when you want to cover up or hide an unwanted object in your image. Use the Property Inspector to set options for the Smudge tool. Use the Smudge Tool

Use the Smudge Tool The changes you can make include these: Change the size of the tool Set the softness of the tool’s edges Choose a round or square shape Set the pressure to determine the strength of the tool Choose the smudge color Select Use entire document to smudge using colors from all layers Use the Smudge Tool
