Energy: Potential vs. Kinetic EQ: How can you differentiate between potential and kinetic energy?
What is energy? Energy is the ability to cause change. There are 2 main types of energy: Potential & Kinetic
Potential Energy is energy that is stored in an object but is not being used.
An object that is not moving has potential energy.
Forms of Potential Energy Gravitational Potential Energy – energy stored between the object and the earth Depends on the object’s weight and height
Elastic Potential Energy – stored in objects that are compressed or stretched.
Chemical Potential Energy – stored in the chemical bonds between atoms.
Kinetic energy is the energy of motion.
An object that is in motion has kinetic energy.
What effects the Kinetic Energy? Speed Faster speed = More Kinetic Energy Mass Greater mass = More Kinetic Energy
